Compared with the very lightweight, 9-foot-wide rolls of Tyvek, the installation may be more time-consuming (and it's certainly more expensive — with a list price of $229 per roll for the Solitex Mento 1000), but I am confident that we have a water-resistive barrier that will do a superb job of protecting our house, while helping achieve ...
Whether using DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap, Tyvek CommercialWrap or DuPont Tyvek StuccoWrap under brick it is important to follow brick manufacturer's guidelines regarding the use of an air space between the brick veneer and sheathing. Typically this space is 1"-2" and will act as a drainage plane if incidental moisture were to penetrate the brick.

Mento is a vapor-open housewrap similar to Tyvek, and those made by Certainteed, Barricade, and many, many others. They vary in design, specific perm rating, etc., but they all meet ICC-ES AC-38, which essential credentials them as a IRC "approved" product, though local building officials have the last word on what is acceptable.
Tyvek weather resistive barriers have not been tested or approved as a flashing material. DuPont introduced the DuPont Flashing System that provides comprehensive protection from water leaks. It is designed to help direct water to the building exterior instead of trapping it inside the wall system and causing water damage.
Our Tyvek is on a 9 foot long roll, so one linear foot off of this roll gets you a piece 1' x 9', which is nine square feet (one sq. yard), weighing in at only 1.9 ounces. That said, a 1' wide piece isn't going to be of much use. You will most likely want a piece at least 3 feet wide.

I tend to go with the cheapest, unless there is a specific reason not to. I have not been using Tyvek, although I literally ordered a few sample suits off amazon the other day. I'm semi alergic to latex, so I had been using non powdered exam gloves.. but I switched over to nitrile gloves a few months ago. I love them!!
Why SOLITEX is the best WRB solution. We often get asked how Proclima's SOLITEX Mento compares to Zip and Tyvek for weather protection. Here's a short answer: SOLITEX Mento ensures the most durable and long lasting walls. That's because it provides a continuous monolithic protective layer that is completely waterproof and airtight, while allowing the most reliable outward drying potential to keep moisture levels safely low.
This next generation vapor permeable air barrier picks up where traditional polymeric wraps leave off. Ideal for wood frame construction, Henry Blueskin ® VP100 is a fully adhered, peel-n-stick system that eliminates air leakage while functioning as a water-resistant barrier and rain barrier.. The UL stuff is about 4X lighter than tyvek a solo size piece is about 1oz vs the 4- 6oz tyvek pieces I see on some gearlists. Maybe the tyvek last a bit longer …don't know, but at only about 10 cents per user night for the clear SUL stuff, that's not really a factor.
Printing on Tyvek. In the vast majority of applications it is used for, Tyvek must be printed. Tyvek used in medical packaging must be printed with often minuscule details of the item contained in the package, andalso with unique barcodes for each. Even Tyvek used on construction sites is likely to have the name of a company printed onto it.

Steve N.: Yes, housewrap can certainly help reduce air leakage if you detail it right. It works better under negative pressure than positive pressure, though, and generally has a lot of holes, tears, rips, and cuts that compromise its ability to control air flow.

Tyvek is a brand of flashspun high-density polyethylene fibers. The material is very strong; it is difficult to tear but can easily be cut with scissors or a knife. Water vapor can pass through Tyvek, but not liquid water. Polypropylene is also a very strong material.
